Precast Concrete and Reinforced Concrete Box Culverts Group

Detailed information about Precast Concrete and Reinforced Concrete Box Culverts Group is given in the lower part of this page.

About the Precast Concrete and Reinforced Concrete Box Culverts Group

Precast reinforced concrete box culvert products are factory-produced reinforced concrete infrastructure elements used at water crossings beneath roads and railways and on site drainage routes to convey surface water and open-channel flows in a controlled manner. In production, moulds, concrete and curing conditions are controlled in the factory environment, resulting in elements that are ready for installation on site.

Box culverts consist of rectangular-section elements in which the bottom and top slabs and the side walls form a single-piece reinforced concrete frame. On site, the elements are laid one after another to form the required line length. Depending on project requirements, single-cell crossings can be arranged, or multi-cell crossings formed by placing units side by side.

The choice between a pipe and a box culvert is made by considering hydraulic capacity, available height, span, sediment transport and maintenance requirements together.

Typical Areas of Use

  • Water crossings beneath roads and railways
  • Water conveyance in stream beds and at flood crossings
  • Flood control and drainage routes
  • Agricultural irrigation and water conveyance lines
  • Industrial facilities and large-site drainage systems

Key Advantages

  • Rectangular section advantage: At crossings where base width and clear span are critical, it offers an efficient solution in terms of layout geometry.
  • Precast production: By controlling moulds, concrete and curing conditions in the factory environment, it provides repeatable production quality.
  • Rapid installation: Reduces in-situ formwork and lengthy on-site concrete work; elements that are ready for installation on site shorten the installation period.
  • Modular configuration: The elements are placed in sequence to form the required culvert length; where necessary, a multi-cell crossing can be formed by placing units side by side.
  • Load-bearing capacity suited to project loads: With a reinforced concrete section designed taking into account fill height, pavement loads and hydraulic conditions, the aim is safe use.
  • Long service life: The reinforced concrete body and correct detailing are intended to provide long-term use and low maintenance requirements.
